Quiet, Please! A Tip for Classroom Management

Happy Tuesday!  With the start of a new school year, comes the challenge of getting a new group of kids used to sitting quietly; ready to learn.  Many of us are facing larger classes, making it even harder to get all of them “with” you.  Today’s Tuesday Teaching tip is a little poem to help get your students focused and ready to listen on the carpet.

Open them, shut them.

Open them, shut them.

Give a little clap, clap, clap.

Open them, shut them.

Open them, shut them,

Fold them in your lap.

How do you encourage your students to be ready to learn?  Please share your ideas and have a peaceful day!

  1. Somehow I wasn’t afraid to sing made-up tunes to my children (even though I’m not a singer) and they did seem to pay more attention. I also kept a small file box (the kind with recipes) that contained individual songs, riddles, word games, tongue twisters, and phonemic awareness games — one per card. When it was circle time, I called on a child to draw a card out of the box and that was the song we sang or game we played. They really paid attention because a classmate was choosing the “right card.”

    • Thanks Ada, I love singing songs to my class, not a singer either, but even the shyest of kids come out of their shell with song. I love the recipe box card idea because my kids want to sing all day long!
